Recipe:

Ingrediens

  • 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into 2-inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Hungarian paprika
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for thickening, optional)
  • For Dumplings:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Directions

  1. Prepare the Beef: In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef cubes and brown them on all sides. Remove the beef and set aside.
  2. Cook the Onions: In the same pot, reduce the heat to medium. Add the onions and garlic, cooking until soft and golden.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Return the beef to the pot. Stir in paprika, caraway seeds, beef broth, diced tomatoes, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
  4. Thicken the Goulash: If desired, mix flour with a little water to make a paste. Stir into the goulash to thicken the sauce. Cook for an additional 10 minutes.
  5. Make Dumplings: While the goulash simmers, mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Stir in milk and melted butter to form a soft dough. Drop spoonfuls of dough into the simmering goulash during the last 15-20 minutes of cooking. Cover and cook until the dumplings are done.
